Episode 01: Susie Burns - Marketing and Events Director

The first episode is Susie Burns introducing the podcast The Career Couch.

Susie talks about her career to date, how she got into marketing and events, what she thought of going to university, the main lessons she has learned to date and how she hopes to improve career advice.

Susie studied French and Business Management at The University of Manchester. After graduating in 2007, a year before a global recession, she talks about how she didn’t really know what she wanted to do and how there were limited resources to help her decide which path to take.

Through researching by speaking to family and friends, she started her career working for an airline as an office assistant and then went on to work as a sponsorship manager for a finance brand. This then directed her career down the sponsorship and events path, she went to work as a sponsorship manager and then director for two media agencies and took a wrong turn trying to help a magazine develop their events strategy. This turned her back to another sponsorship agency where she loved working until her maternity leave and then redundancy in 2020.

The main lessons she has learned have been about researching. Research the industry you want to go in and speak to people about what it is like to work for a company. Also, think twice before you take that new job because it is going to pay you 50% more. There is often a reason why… it’s danger money!
